A forgotten sprinkler wastes about 1000 litres of water an hour

How Shoalhaven Water helps

Pricing

One of the best ways that we at Shoalhaven Water can encourage water conservation is through water pricing structures.

Since 1996 we have been implementing a fairer system of
water charges with lower fixed charges and increased per kilolitre rates. This means that the more you use the more you pay which encourages everyone to be more water wise around the home. The good news is, the less you use the less you pay so the new charges now reflect more accurately each individual household’s usage.

In practice this means that everyone is encouraged to use less water and also that most households are noticing a decrease in the overall amount they pay for their water service. It’s what you could call a ‘win win’ situation.

Strange as it may sound, it actually makes good economic sense to lobby for higher prices for another reason. Water conservation saves huge amounts of money by postponing, or even eliminating, the need for costly expansions to municipal water and sewer systems.

Water Meters

Although they were brought in over 10 years ago, water meters in the Shoalhaven are the silent water conservation workers. Studies overseas have shown that households that have a meter (and are therefore more aware of their water use and how much it costs) use up to 50% less water than those without a meter.

It’s all about being aware and recognising opportunities to cut down the amount of water we use. At Shoalhaven Water we want to help you to become water wise, save money and help the environment. Rainwater Tanks

One of the Shoalhaven’s most important water catchment areas is just above your head! During a heavy rain storm hundreds of litres of water can drain off an average roof. By installing a rainwater tank you can capture and store this precious resource to help take the strain off our town water and save money on your water accounts.

Shoalhaven Water has introduced a rainwater tank rebate scheme to help you do this. We are offering up to $500 off the cost of a rainwater tank plus an additional rebate if you get a licensed plumber to connect your tank to supply your toilet or washing machine (terms and conditions apply).

This is one of the many ways Shoalhaven Water is working with you to create sensible solutions for people and the environment to ensure that clean, fresh drinking water doesn’t become a luxury item.
