Frequently asked questions

What is a water hydrant

Water hydrants are valve access points located along the water reticulation supply lines. They are located just underground on either a road or pathway and have a cover that is generally identified by a bright yellow cover.

Firefighters use water hydrants to access the water supply in the case of a fire. Hydrants are also used by our operations crew when they are conducting maintenance in your area.

You will recognise a hydrant by its bright yellow lid.

Why are hydrants important

During an emergency, such as a bushfire or house fire, it is important to know where the water hydrant is located. Having clear access to a water hydrant can impact how quickly the emergency can be brought under control.

It is important to ensure there are no obstructions preventing firefighters from locating and connecting hoses to hydrants, or that the hydrant is not covered by grass or soil.

There should also be no bush or tree limbs that could interfere with anyone approaching the hydrant and attempting to operate it.

Hydrants may be unuseable when:

  • Grass or vegetation has grown over the hydrant cover.
  • Dirt, earth or rubbish has been piled over a hydrant.
  • Cars are parked on top of a hydrant.
  • Gardens have been grown over a hydrant.
  • Hydrants have been relocated due to building construction.
  • Markers have worn out or been dislodged.
  • Insects have infested a hydrant.
